Me: You really need to get a new battery for your smartphone honey, it’s very frustrating not being able to get hold of you sometimes.

Him: No Mum. I’ve decided I want to buy a cheap phone without internet facilities; I’m sick of being reachable in so many ways by so many people. And the social media just distracts me. Call me ‘The Backlash’.

    Oh, right, telephones used to be just…telephones.

    Our almost-10-year-old daughter just got her very first phone for one of the late-December holidays. It is part of her tentative first steps toward independence (ignoring the irony that we are paying for her independence).

    So far (all of 15 days), she has rewarded our trust…as has/will your son (we have always trusted him).

    Side note: my mother brilliantly short-circuited any “rebelliousness” I may have had when, early in high school, she said something to the effect of: “Do whatever you want, just be careful.”

    That’s awesome! My son has told me that he can’t live without his. That made me laugh so I asked him how he spent the first 10 years without it and he replies, “I didn’t have anyone I wanted to talk to when I was a baby!” LOL

    Good for him! I admire his kicking back against the peer pressure and doing things his own way.
    And this from a man who just, reluctantly, bought his first smartphone at 51!

      Actually, they’re amazingly useful & clever, it’s just about controlling them, not letting them control you.. good luck with that 😬😬

        To be honest I bought it largely to help with time pressure. I can now respond to comments and read blogs on my hour commute to work on the bus. This frees up time in the evenings etc. But I can definitely see how I could get addicted….

      He’s a pretty unique fella- loves to read huge thick books and be quiet at home sometimes (don’t know where he got that from!). He’s also a surfer, so loves solo time with the ocean (a classic Introvert really). He’s studying Business studies, and has finally realized how programmed we are to ‘consume’ and purchase; I’m not saying he’s an angel, but has definitely gained a new awareness of the bigger picture behind social media use…
